Anthropology

Since the mid-1980s, Peking University has been at the forefront of anthropology education in China, guided by the visionary leadership of Mr. Fei Xiaotong. Recognized as a key discipline by the Ministry of Education in 2002, anthropology now offers both master’s and doctoral programs, and in 2018, the undergraduate major was officially launched. Our anthropology program stays true to Mr. Fei’s emphasis on the strong connection between anthropology and sociology. Students begin with a two-year foundation in sociology before delving into anthropology, with a primary focus on socio-cultural anthropology. As a globally oriented and interdisciplinary field, anthropology at Peking University intersects with disciplines such as political science, law, economics, religious studies, archaeology, museum studies, linguistics, and human geography. Students also benefit from a comprehensive education in foreign languages and national history, essential for a well-rounded understanding of cross-cultural perspectives. The anthropology program at Peking University builds on its established strengths in Han Chinese cultural traditions and ethnic studies, while expanding students' understanding of global perspectives and cross-cultural research. Methodologically, Peking University’s anthropology program leads the field in ethnographic research and fieldwork, laying a solid foundation in qualitative social science research for undergraduates.

Many go on to pursue advanced degrees at prestigious universities worldwide, while others take on impactful roles in research institutes, government agencies, social welfare organizations, and a wide range of enterprises and institutions.
